Immunohistological study of delta antigen in the liver with fulminant hepatitis.

Delta infection among fulminant hepatitis in Japan was studied using immunoperoxidase method. Liver specimens of patients with B viral fulminant hepatitis in USA were examined as control.Delta antigen was not found in 41 Japanese cases. In American patients, 6 out of 16 cases (37.5%) were positive for delta antigen in the liver, despite extensive destruction of hepatocytes.We also reported the incidence of anti-delta in serological study of various liver diseases in Japan. In 2 out of 206 HBsAg positive patients anti-delta was detected in their sera.Immunoperoxidase method for detection of delta antigen is useful in any laboratories where serological assay for delta infection is not established. More study is needed to find prevalence of delta infection in Japan.
