Immunohistological study of delta-antigen and anti-delta in hepatitis B virus infection.

The incidence of delta infection among HBsAg carriers with chronic liver disease in Japan was studied using immunoperoxidase method, and was compared with those in USA.<BR>Delta-antigen was found only in 2 cases out of 146 (1.3%) HBsAg positive patients in Japan, whereas in American patients 8 out of 21 cases (38.1%) were positive. These two patients in Japan had no drug abuse but both traveled overseas and one of them had a history of blood transfusion. The clinical courses and histological findings of these cases showed a quiescent liver disease.<BR>Since in vitro assay of delta requires a large quantity of liver tissue containing the antigen, the immunoperoxidase method seems to be the most practical at this moment in a country where delta antigen is not easily available.
