Uniformity of Furanocoumarin Content in Micropropagated Glehnia littoralis Plants

Seed-grown plants and clonal plants obtained by shoot tip culture from one single plant of Glehnia littoralis (Umbelliferae) were cultivated in an experimental field for two years. The results of field trials indicated that the four major furanocoumarin contents, i.e., imperatorin, isoimperatorin, 8-geranyloxypsoralen, and bergamottin contents, were more uniform among the roots of the micropropagated plants than among the roots of the seed-propagated plants, and that variations in morphological characteristics among the former plants were not larger than those among the latter plants. No variation in the chromosome number was found in the root tip cells of the micropropagated plants.
