Seasonal changes in the growth, naphthoquinone pigment (shikonin derivatives) content, and pigment yield of L. erythrorhizon, which has been used in oriental medicine for many centuries, were studied during two years of cultivation in Nagasaki. The pigment yield reached a maximum in November for both one-year-old and two-year- old plants. This suggested that November is the right harvest month, before the aerial parts of the plant begin to die. Futhermore, the pigment yield was found to be greater in two-year-old plants than in one-year-old plants in November.
