High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Analysis of Furanocoumarins in Glehnia littoralis

Seven linear furanocoumarins or psoralen derivatives in the subterranean part of Glehnia littoralis, grown at various places, mainly in Japan, were quantitatively analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The furanocoumarin composition and their content of the plant varied considerably depending on the habitat of the plants: imperatorin and isoimperatorin were the major furanocoumarins in the plants grown at Niigata and Miyagi prefectures and 5-geranyloxypsoralen in those collected in the southern parts of Japan and Korea. The total amounts of the seven furanocoumarins were, on average, 0.014-0.291 % in the rhizome and 0.008-0.150% in the root. Saposhnikovia roots were found to contain psoralen, xanthotoxin, bergapten and imperatorin, but neither 5- nor 8-geranyloxypsoralen.
