Glucosylation of Salicyl Alcohol by Gardenia jasminoides Cell Cultues

Cultured cells of Gardenia jasminoides produced both salicin and isosalicin from exogenously supplied salicyl alcohol. The glucosylation activity of the cells was highest in the exponential phase of growth and ca. 70% of the added substrate was converted to the glucosides within 4 days. The rate of glucosylation was also dependent on the medium composition such as auxin and sucrose concentrations. The ratio of salicin to isosalicin formed from salicyl alcohol was influenced by the growth stage of the cultured cells. Salicin was converted to isosalicin when exogenously added to the culture.
