Variability of the Furanocoumarin Composition and Isozyme Pattern in Glehnia littoralis of Different Geographical Origin

Fruits were collected from Glehnia littoralis plants growing in four different places in Japan and their seedlings were cultivated in the field. The morphological characteristics of the leaves, the isozyme patterns of the leaf peroxidase and the five furanocoumarin contents in the root of the four strains varied significantly from each other. The high-performance liquid chromatographic patterns of seven linear type furanocoumarins of the root of the cultivated plants were the same as those of the plants growing wildly in their respective original habitat. These results suggest that G. littoralis plants growing in different habitat are genetically varied.
