Morphology of Zr or Ti Based Amorphous Alloys after Hydrogen Absorption and Desorption Cycles

The shape and fracture surface of amorphous and crystalline zirconium or titanium based alloys after hydrogen absorption and desorption cycles were observed by the scanning electron microscope. All amorphous alloy samples became brittle by hydrogen absorption but did not take place self-disintegration. For instance, the shape of amorphous Zr_<37>Ni_<63> alloy remained intact even after 100 times of hydrogen absorption-desorption cycles. On the other hand, the crystalline alloys which absorbed hydrogen by formation of metal hydrides were disintegrated into small flakes or powders. It was suggested that the shape retention of the amorphous alloys after hydrogen absorption was related mainly to their hydrogen absorption mode.
