Crystallization Behavior of Amorphous High-Carbon Alloy Steels

Crystallization behavior has been exmained for amorphous high-carbon alloy steels (Fe-Cr-C, Fe-Mo-C and Fe-W-C ternary systems, Fe-Cr-Mo-C, Fe-Cr-W-C and Fe-Mo-W-C quaternary systems and Fe-Cr-Mo-W-C pentad system) by differential thermal analysis, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystallization temperature of alloys containing chromium, molybdenum and/or tungsten less than about 8% is of the order of 600〜700 K, but it rises gradually with increasing the content of these elements and attains 944 K for Fe_<42>Cr_<24>Mo_<16>C_<18> alloy and 988 K for Fe_<42>Cr_<18>Mo_<16>W_6C_<18> alloy. These temperatures are higher by about 130〜175 K as compared with the highest value for iron-based amorphous alloys (813 K for the Fe-Si-B system) reported so far. This fact indicates that the amorphous phase of the present alloy system is very stable against crystallization. The effectiveness of alloying elements on increasing crystallization temperature decreases in the order of tungsten, molybdenum and chromium. The crystallization of these amorphous alloy steels proceeds through two metastable phases (MS-I and MS-II) and finally to the stable phase by nucleation and growth mechanisms. In Fe-Cr-C alloys, the MS-I phase is a crystal with the same structure as α-iron and the MS-II phase has a (Fe, Cr)_3C type orthorhombic structure.
