This paper deals with the review on alloy components and structural classification of quasicrystals. The structure and morphology of the stable quasicrystals are discussed in the relation to the equilibrium phase diagram. The stability of quasicrystalline structure is dominated by their electronic structure and an empirical criterion for the formation of quasicrystals is proposed. It is concluded that the stable quasicrystalline phase is a plausible Hume-Rothery phase.
