Influence of Hydrogenation on the Magnetic Properties of Gd-Co Amorphous Alloys

Gd-rich Gd-Co amorphous alloys with several compositions have been prepared by melt-quenching in an argon atmosphere. Hydrogen absorption has been carried out at 373 K under 5 MPa in order to investigate the influence on their magnetic properties. Magnetization and the Curie temperature are reduced by hydrogen absorption of several percent. Pressure effect on the Curie temperature is explained in terms of the so-called s-d model which is a combined model of localized spins and itinerant d electrons. Pressure shift of the Curie temperature becomes smaller with increasing amount of hydrogen. Thermal expansion anomaly which is closely correlated with the Co moment is slightly weakened by hydrogenation. From these results, it is concluded that the absorption of hydrogen gas into Gd-Co amorphous alloys leads to a decrease in both of Co and Gd moments.
