Thermal, Magnetic and Electrical Properties of Mn-Metalloid Amorphous Ribbons

Mn-Ge, Mn-Si, Mn-P and Mn-B amorphous ribbons were prepared by melt-quenching in order to investigate their thermal, magnetic and electrical properties. The forming ability of amorphous alloys depends on the size difference between Mn and the solute atoms, except in the Mn-Ge alloy system. The crystallization temperature is also closely correlated to the size difference and the liquidus temperature of the mixture. Mn-Ge and Mn-Si amorphous ribbons exhibit a characteristic spin glass behavior, accompanying a broad maximum in the thermomagnetization curves. Because of the increase of antiferromagnetic direct exchange interactions, the spin glass behavior of Mn-B amorphous alloys is not so obvious as that of Mn-Ge and Mn-Si amorphous alloys. The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity of Mn_<72>Si_<28> amorphous ribbon exhibits a broad minimum around 130 K, and a lnT plot below the minimum gives a linear relationship over a wide temperature range. The temperature coefficient in the vicinity of room temperature is positive, although the electrical resistivity is estimated to be extremely high.
