Young's Modulus of Fe-Si-B Amorphous Wires

The Young's modulus sound velocity (V_E) and Young's Modulus (E) of amorphous wires of 100-120 μm diameters for Fe_<100-x-y>Si_xB_y and (Fe-M)_<75>Si_<10>B_<15> were measured as a function of alloy composition, where M is the transition metal from groups IV-VIII. E increases from 1.58×10^<11> to 1.87×10^<11> N/m^2 with increasing Si and B content for the Fe alloys, while V_E=〓E/p changes from 4.79 to 5.10 km/s with the replacement of Fe with M elements. It is found that E increases linearly with increasing σ_f and H_v, and ratios of σ_f/E and H_v/3E show a nearly constant value (〓0.019) for all the amorphous wires, in spite of significant changes in alloy composition and mechanical strengths. Considering the compositional dependence of these mechanical properties and the strong correlation among them, it was suggested that (1) the short-range ordering due to the strong interaction between metal and metalloid atoms causes an increase in E, V_E, σ_f and H_v, and (2) the Fe based amorphous wires possess a common mechanism for plastic flow.
