Corrosion Behavior of Amorphous Ni-Ti-P and Ni-Cr-P Alloys

Effects of the addition of titanium or chromium on the corrosion behavior of amorphous Ni-20P alloy have been compared by immersion tests and electrochemical measurements. Changes in the crystallization temperature and microhardness with the content of these elements have also been examined. The addition of either elements lowers the corrosion rate and anodic current density and raises the corrosion potential, crystallization temperature and microhardness. In contrast, crystalline binary Ni-Ti alloys, in spite of considerably high contents of titanium, have shown a significantly high anodic current density, particularly in 1 N HCl. The comparison of the amorphous Ni-Ti-20P and Ni-Cr-20P alloys has revealed that the addition of chromium is more effective in improving the corrosion resistance but is less effective in increasing the microhardness and thermal stability.
