Effect of Temperature and Deformation on the Structure of Amorphous Metals

The temperature dependence of the structure factor of amorphous Pd_<80>Si_<20> and Ni_<80>P_<20> has been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction. The main effect of the temperature variation observed was, as expected, a flattening out of the peak profile, i.e., the amplitude of the oscillation in the structure factor decreases with an increase of temperature. This behaviour corresponds to that observed in liquid metals. The effect of cold-rolling on the structure of amorphous Ni_<78>Si_<10>B_<12> has also been carried out by X-ray diffraction. The deformation effect was found to change the peak profile in the structural functions reversely compared with that of low temperature annealing.
