Passivation of the amorphous alloys in a hot concentrated hydrochloric acid takes place due to the formation of a passive hydrated chromium oxyhydroxide film. The addition of molybdenum to the alloys is necessary for passivation in this aggressive acid, but molybdenum ion is a very minor constituent of the passive film. A significant enrichment of metallic molybdenum is found in the alloy surface immediately under the surface film. The concentrations of phosphate and chloride ions in the film are high in the potential regions where the surface film is unstable.
