INVAR AND ELINVAR CHARACTERISTICS IN AMORPHOUS Fe-BASE ALLOYS

Amorphous samples have been prepared from the melts by a single roller quenching method in the form of ribbon 0.5〜2mm in width and 20〜50μm in thickness. On thermal expansion curves of amorphous Fe-B and Fe-P alloys, a large anomaly was seen in a wide temperature range below the Curie temperature, indicating the Invar characteristics. The amorphous Fe-B alloys exhibited other Invar effects such as the forced volume magnetostriction and high-field susceptibility, which are so large that they are comparable to those of crystalline Fe-Ni Invar alloys. Concentration dependence of the magnetic moment per iron atom for the amorphous Fe-B alloys was not monotonic and a maximum occurred around 14 at% boron, while the Curie temperature decreased with a decrease in the boron content. The amorphous Fe-B alloys also showed remarkably a large ΔE effect and linear saturation magnetostriction, and this large ΔE effect will be responsible for the Elinvar characteristics. As a result, these amorphous Fe-B alloys indicated an excellent temperature coefficient of the delay time because they have the Invar and Elinvar characteristics.
