Elastic Properties and Temperature Coefficient of Delay Time in Amorphous Pd-Si Alloys

Pd_<80>Si_<20> amorphous alloy and its amorphous alloys containing Ag or Cu were prepared from the melts by a roller quenching method. The temperature coefficient of Young's modulus at room temperature was measured under various conditions. The temperature coefficient of delay time was calculated from both the temperature coefficients of Young's modulus and thermal expansion. As a result, a small coefficient enough to use as delay lines was obtained by selecting the revolution number of rolls, additional elements, heat-treatments and the degree of cold rolling. In addition, it has been found that they have very small attenuation coefficients. Consequently, it was concluded that the amorphous alloys of Pd-Si systems would be applicable to ultrasonic delay lines.
