Several kinds of Co-early transition metal binary amorphous films have been prepared by rf sputtering in order to investigate the linear magnetostriction, magnetization and Hall resistivity. Furthermore, the lower limit of glass formation has been examined. The validity of the split-band model for these alloys is discussed, and the relationship between the linear magnetostriction and the spontaneous Hall coefficient for the alloys having a positive linear magnetostriction is explained by this model. The spontaneous Hall angle of Co-based amorphous alloys is several times smaller than that of Fe-B amorphous alloys, and the composition dependence similar to that of the magnetization. The ordinary Hall coefficient is positive in analogy with that of the fcc Co. The forming ability of the amorphous phase is closely correlated with the size difference between Co and early transition metals, that is, the larger the difference in radius becomes, the wider the Co-rich range becomes.
