Thin magnetic films with an approximate composition of Sm_2Co_<7.8> were prepared on quartz substrates at high temperatures from 150°to 750℃ by rf sputtering method. Film structures and magnetic properties have been studied. With the increase of the substrate temperature, the coercive force increases and then decreases through a well-reproducible maximum value of 11 kOe at 400°±50℃. It is shown by X-ray analyses that fine crystallites of SmCo_5, Sm_2Co_7 and Sm_2Co_<17> phases coexist in films with high coercive forces.
