Mechanical Properties of Amorphous Cu-Zr Alloy

The elastic, plastic and fracture behaviors under tension were investigated for amorphous Cu_<57>Zr_<43> alloy which is a typical metal-metal system. Amorphous specimens were prepared in the shape of ribbons about 20 μm thick and 0.5 mm wide by using a centrifugal quenching apparatus. This amorphous alloy has fracture strength of about 200 kg/mm^2 and Young's modulus of about 7.6×10^3 kg/mm^2. The fracture strength decreases slightly with increase in the strain rate, and the tensile fracture occurs after a localized shear slip. The fracture surface is found to consist of the smooth region by shear slip and the vein region by unstable rupture. From these results it is concluded that metal-metal alloys exhibit the same mechanical behaviors as metal-metalloid alloys which have been more extensively investigated.
