Icosahedral Quasicrystals of a Melt-Quenched Al-Mn Alloy Observed by High-Resolution Electron Microscopy

We have examined a non-equilibrium pseudocrystalline phase in a melt-quenched Al-14.3 at% Mn alloy by transmission electron microscopy using a many-beam imaging technique. In a high-resolution image we observed a number of bright dots distributed homogeneously lying along fivefold directions with no translational symmetry. Analyzing the image, we proposed a structure model comprised of a three-dimentional aggregation of icosahedrons, each consisting of twelve Al and one Mn atoms.
