Direct Imaging of Metal Atoms in Binary Alloys by Means of High Voltage, High Resolution Electron Microscopy

High voltage, high resolution electron microscopy has been applied to the study of crystal structures of alloys and intermetallic compounds in atomic level. The atomic arrangements in imperfectly ordered alloys as well as perfectly ones are determined directly from the observed images with the aid of computer simulations based on the many-beam dynamical diffraction theory. The results indicate that the direct imaging of atoms with the use of high voltage electron microscopy is a new technique for the investigation of structural phase transitions in alloys.
