High Resolution Images of Partially Disordered Au-Mn Alloys Observed by High Voltage Electron Microscopy

Partially disordered atomic arrangements in Au-Mn alloys with about 20at.% Mn have been investigated by high-voltage, high-resolution electron microscopy with the aid of an image processing system. The multislice calculation of many-beam images elucidates that the Mn atom columns parallel to the incident beam appear as bright dots and the brightness of dots is roughly proportional to the substitution fraction of Au atoms for Mn atoms under appropriate conditions of experimental parameters. A modulated structure with concentration fluctuation is visualized with the image processing by the Fourier transformation. Pair correlations of the Mn-atom columns projected down along the incident beam are elucidated from autocorrelation functions of selected areas of about 50 nm^2 in the observed images.
