X-Ray Photoemission Spectrum, Electrical Resistivity and Magnetic Susceptibility of Titanium-Oxygen Interstitial Alloys

The electronic state of hcp titanium-oxygen interstitial alloys is discussed on the basis of measurements of X-ray photoemission spectrum, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The Ti 2p and 3p levels shift towards higher binding energy with increasing oxygen content. Considerable anisotropic variations of the resistivity are observed along the directions normal and parallel to the c axis as functions of temperature and composition. It is suggested that the density of states N(E_F) is lower in the ordered state than in the disordered state, and decreases with increasing oxygen content. The additional electrons associated with the oxygens fill probably an oxygen-metal bonding state below the 3d band.
