Neutron Irradiation Hardening of Boron-Doped Copper

The neutron irradiation effect of boron-doped copper, containing 0.08〜0.9 at % B, has been studied by means of tensile testing, internal friction measurement and electron microscopy. Thermal neutron fluxes are in the range from 0.36 to 8.9×10^<19> nvt. The increase in proof stress is measured as a function of the concentration of ^4He introduced by the transmutation of ^<10>B, and interpreted to be mainly due to interstitial dislocation loops created secondarily by neutron irradiation. The grain boundary relaxation peak in the internal friction curve is suppressed to a very low level by irradiation and recovers progressively by successive annealing.
