High Resolution Images and Martensitic Transition of V_3Si by 1 MV Electron Microscopy

High-voltage electron microscopy has been carried out to observe high-resolution images of a crystal of the superconducting A 15 type compound V_3Si with [001] axial illumination. The observed many-beam images were interpreted well in comparison with computed images by the multislice method. The cubic-tetragonal martensitic transition at about 20 K has been investigated by the bright-field method using a cold stage. In the tetragonal phase, we observed twin lamellae parallel to {210} planes in addition to finer twin lamellae parallel to {110} planes. Mottled or tweed patterns, which were characterized with diffuse striations lying parallel to {110} and {210} traces, were found before growing the twin lamellae and were ascribed to be a precursor effect of the martensitic transition.
