Diffuse Scattering Due to Out-of-Step Configurations of Oxygen Atoms in a TiO_<0.42> Crystal

The short range configuration of oxygen atoms jn a Tie..., crystal has beenstudied by analyses of X-ray and neu1.ron diffuse scattering. The diffuse scatteringis distributed on the planes normal to the c" axis around most of the reciprocallattice points of H -K=3n, Z,=odd and II -K=3n'x1, L$0. The diffuse scatter-ing around each point has a hexagonal symmetry in the L=odd planes just abovethe interstitial order-disorder transition temperature 575'C. The intensity maxi-IIIUIII becoxttes circular and shifts gradually apart from the reciprocal latticepoint with increasing tenvperature. ?fhe intensity distributions are interpreted internas of the correlative configuration of out-of-steps of the oxygen distributionaccontpanying the static distortion of titanium lattice.
