Pressure Dependence of Hydrogen-Induced Amorphization in C15 Laves Compound ErFe_2((A)Amorphous Alloys)

Structural changes of the C15 Laves compound ErFe_2 during differential thermal analysis (DTA) in a hydrogen atmosphere and isothermal hydrogenation have been investigated by X-ray diffraction as a function of the hydrogen pressure. ErFe_2 absorbs hydrogen in the crystalline state by heating in DTA below 0.5 MPa H_2, while it absorbs hydrogen keeping the original C15 structure and subsequently transforms to the amorphous state with increasing temperature above 2.0 MPa H_2. On the other hand, by isothermal hydrogenation of ErFe_2, the amorphous phase is formed between 400 and 600 K and above 0.5 MPa H_2, but no amorphous phase is formed below 0.5 MPa H_2. The present work indicates that HIA in the C15 Laves compounds RFe_2 occurs above the critical hydrogen pressure which depends on the kind of the rare earth elements.
