Formation and Crystallization of Hydrogen-Induced Amorphous Ti_3InH_<4.5> Alloy

Structural changes of a titanium compound Ti_3In with the D0_<19> structure caused by hydrogenation have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy. Crystallization and hydrogen desorption behavior of the hydrogen-induced amorphous alloy have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry, XRD and hydrogen analysis. On hydrogenation of the Ti_3In compound, an amorphous single phase a-Ti_3InH_<4.5> is formed below about 350 K where the c-Ti_3InH_x Phase having the bcc structure is formed. Hydrogen absorption of Ti_3In occurs between 32 and 36 ks drastically which gives rise to non-solid solution type amorphization at 300 K. a-Ti_3InH_<4.5> crystallizes to fcc type c-Ti_3InH_<4.5> above 484K. Hydrogen is desorbed from the crystalline phase above the crystallization temperature.
