Structural changes of the equimolar intermetallic compounds RAl (R=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Th, Dy, Ho and Er) by hydrogenation were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The RAl compounds (R is a light rare earth metal : La, Ce, Pr, Nd and Sm) amorphize by hydrogenation at about 400 K, but the other RAl ones (R is a heavy rare earth metal : Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) do not amorphize under the present experimental conditions. The present work demonstrates that the thermally unstable and large lattice size RAl compounds amorphize by hydrogenation. The thermal stabilities and crystallization behaviors of these amorphous a-RAlH_x alloys were investigated by DSC and XRD.hydrogenamorphousrare earth metalintermetallic compoundcrystallization
