The ultraviolet, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of cycloalkan [b] indolones have been investigated. Steric inhibition of resonance is accompanied by a bathochromic and hypochromic shift in the ultraviolet spectra. It was found that the carbonyl stretching frequency of cycloalkan [b] indolones increased as increasing ring size. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra also showed ring size effect.
