Estrogenic effects of royal jelly(Chemical & Pharmacological study)

Royal jelly (RJ) from honeybees (Apis mellifera) is one of the most popular traditional health food all over the world. The benefits of RJ as alternatives to prevent various symptoms in menopausal women have been known, suggesting RJ has estrogenic effects. We have, therefore, been investigating the estrogenic effect of RJ. Several in vitro molecular pharmacological analyses, transient luciferase reporter gene assay, receptor binding assay, and estrogensensitive endogenous gene expression and cellular function, showed that RJ contains some components which bind to estrogen receptors, both ERα and ERβ and stimulate estrogen-sensitive gene expression and cellular functions. Furthermore, in vivo study with ovariectomized rats showed that RJ restores estrogen-sensitive gene expression in uterus but not in brain, whereas 17β-estradiol restored in both organs. These findings suggest that RJ is a new/traditional organ-selective estrogen modulator.
