Anisotropy of Zeeman Effects in Optical Absorption Spectra of Tetragonal Crystals Cs_3CoCl_5 and Cs_3CoBr_5. : I. Experimental Results

Dependences of Zeeman patterns on the direction and the strength of magnetic fields H_0 applied perpendicularly to the c-axis, are investigated in 16500cm^<-1>∼27000cm^<-1> at 20k∼1.3K by using H_0 up to 78kOe in the following three arrangements; E⊥c and E⫽H_0, E⊥c and E⊥H_0 and E⫽c, where E is the electric vector of the incident light. Optical anisotropies depend on the mutual directions between E and H_0, and in some cases depend on the direction of H_0 itself with periodicity π/2. While, Zeeman splittings are independent of the direction of H_0 in all cases. It is determined by analyzing anisotropies of Zeeman spectra, whether the excited state is Γ_6 or Γ_7, and whether its g⊥-value is positive or negative. The ratio between the two transition moments of transitions from |^4A_2±1/2> and |^4A_2±3/2> to a certain excited Kramers doublet is determined from dependences of the intensity on the strength of H_0 in several cases.
