Optical Investigations of Rare-Earth Orthochromites.III.GdCrO_3 and Summary of the R' Band in RCrO_3

Optical absorption spectrum corresponding to the A..+ E. transition of Cr" in42GdCr0. was studied. The 7?' band was observed in the lower enuergy side of the R ex-citon band. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the 7<' band implythat the 7?' band is the combined excitation of a Cr" exciton and a Gd" spin flip induced by the isotropic part of the Cr"-Gd" exchange interaction. As the summaryof the successive papers, the classification of the 71?' band in RCrO.(R=Yb, Tm, Er,No, Dy, Tb and Gd) was undertaken.
