Optical Reflectivity Spectra of Incommensurate Layer Compounds, (CeS)_<1.2>NbS_2 and (CeS)_<0.6>NbS_2

The polarized optical reflectivities from the basal planes of incommensurate layer compounds (CeS)_<1.2>NbS_2 and (CeS)_<0.6>NbS_2 have been measured at room temperature. These two compounds have a stage-1 and a stage-2 structure, respectively, when considered as intercalation compounds of NbS_2. The main features appeared in the interband transition region of the spectra can be correlated with those in the reflectivity spectrum of the host material NbS_2 on the basis of the rigid-band model for the host electronic band-structure. The oscillator fits to the free carrier reflectivities in the spectra have been made and the analysis of the plasma frequencies suggests a large charge transfer from the CeS layer to the host NbS_2 layer.
