7? exciton lines of YbCr0. corresponding to the 'A..-+'E. transition of Cr"have been measured at 4;2 K, where a first order' phase transition induced bymagnetic field H.,(J/a)x67 k0e has been found. NVe concluded that this' phasetransition is a ntetamagnetic transition at which ths weak ferromagnetic momentof the Cr" spins reverses its coupling with the mxagnetic moment of the Yb"spins from antiparallel to parallel. By the analysis of the spectral changes in themetamagnetic transition, the molecular field upon 1,he Cr" ton due to the Cr-Ybmagnetic interaction was estimated. Generally, if the mnagnetic naoment of therare-earth spins couples antiparallel to the weak ferromagnetic moment of thetransition-naetal spins for other orthochromites a?td orthoferrites, the naetamag-netic transition of this type will be expected.
