Magnetic Properties of Incommensurate Layer Compounds, (CeS)_<1.2>NBS_2 and (CeS)_<0.6>NbS_2

The magraetic susceptibilities and rrtagnetizations of incommensur;tte layer corn-pounds (CeS)...NbS. and (CeS)...NbS, 2110 reported. The rrnagnetic susceptibilities inthe paramagnetic region of tlae above two compounds are analyzed taking account ofthe crystal field acting on Ce" and the molecular field. The crystal field splitting of'F,7=, ntultiplet (Ce") is estimated at ca. 500 K. The large splitting suggests that thescreening of the crystal field by couaducI.ion electrons is xveak in the CeS layer. Thecompound (CeS)...NbS. orders antiferromagnetically near 3 K acco?npanied by aweak-ferromagnetic moment, while a magnetic ordering witla a spozataneousmagnetization is observed near 3 K in (CeS)...NbS). Both tlae two compounds displaya metamagnetic transition at 2.3 kOe (7'=2.0 K).
