Optical Spectra of Polydiacetylene (PTS,HDU,TCDU) Single Crystals Studied by Synchrotron Radiation Spectroscopy

Polarized reflection spectra have been measured on three different kinds ofpolydiacetylene crystal, poly-[2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol-bis-(p-toluene sulfonate)](PTS), rolv-[2,4-hexadivne-1,6-diol-bis-rhenvJurethane] (HDU) and roJv-[5,7-decadiyne-1,12-diol-bis-phenylurethanel (TCDU), over the photon energy rangeof I-25 eV by means of synchrotron radiation spectroscopy. Spectral changes,associated with topochemical transformation from monomer to polymer crystalsor PTS and with the stress-induced isomeric phase-transition or TCDU crysta?s,were investigated. Spectral features showing characteristic polarization dependencewith respect to the rolvmer chain axis arc interrreted bv an electronic t>ana-structure model of rolvdiacet>'lene crvstals. Esreciall>', the reflection reaks locatedat about 2 and 7 eV are assigned to the one-dimensional excitons associatedwith the n-x" transitions on the conjugated polymer chains.
