Study of the Ground States ^4A_2 of Cs_3CoCl_5 and Cs_3CoBr_5 Crystals by the Zeeman Effect of Optical Absorption-Linses

Zeeman effects are measured at the liquid-helium temperature by using magnetic fields up to 80kOe. Parameters in the spin-Hamiltonian for ^4A_2 are determined by the least-square method as follows, D=-4.25±0.05cm^<-1>, g_⫽=2.43±0.03, g_⊥=2.32±0.03, f_⫽=-0.01±0.03 and f_⊥⊥=-0.01±0.03 for Cs_3CoCl_5, and D=-5.25±0.05cm^<-1>, g_⫽=2.43±0.03, g_⊥=2.34±0.03, f_⫽=-0.01±0.03 and f_⊥=-0.01±0.03 for Cs_3CoBr_5. These values agree quite well with those obtained from the ESR study. The initial splitting 2D is calculated on the basis of the crystalline-field theory as a function of θ_⫽ which is the angle between one of Co-X (X=Cl or Br) bonds and the crystallographic c-axis. The angle 2θ_⫽ which gives the value of 2D, is 106゜28'±20' for Cs_3CoCl_5 and 106゜6'±20' for Cs_3CoBr_5. This result for Cs_3CoCl_5 agrees fairly well with 2θ_⫽=106゜6' which has been determined from the X-ray study.
