Zeeman Effect of Absorption Line of CsCr Alum

The Zeeman effect of a sharp line in the red region of cesium chromium alum was investigated at low temperatures, using the magnetic fields up to 27 kOe, which were applied parallel to the [100], [111], and [110] axes. The g determined. Comparing the experimental Zeeman patterns with the theoretical ones on the basis of the ligand field theory, it is concluded that the absorption line corresponds to the magnetic dipole transition from the ground state ^4A_2 to the excited state E^^-(^2E). Although the transition from the ground state ^4A_2 to the excited state 2A^^-(^2E) is not observed, it is suggested that the energy separation between the two states 2A^^-(^2E) and E^^-(^2E) is much larger than 3.5 cm^<-1>.
