Two-Dimensional Spin Correlations in High Stage CoCl_2-Graphite Intercalation Compounds

We present direct evidence for the two-dimensional magnetic ordering inhugh stage (2nd and 3rd) compounds of CoCl.-graphite intercalation usingneutron diffraction technique. Experiments from the high stage compoundsshow interesting features that at the lower transition temperature (T..) the systemsundergo a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic transition but above T.. thescattering is characteristic of the full two-dimensional magnetic correlations.This suggests that the intermediate phase between two successive phase transitionsat T.. and T.., which had bsen observed in the high stage CoCl.-graphite inter-calation compounds by earlier magnetic measurements, is a two-dimensional onepossibly with a XY character.
