Neutron Scattering Studies of the Ordered Structure of C_<24>Rb

A naeutron elastic scattering measuremerat has been performed o:rn C.,?Rb attemperatures between 106 K and 165 K. The observed extinction rule of thediffraction can be explained on th.e basis of a simple model: Rb layers form atrjansular lattice with fundanaental wave vector l GFI l= 1.20 A ', which is ntodu-lated by the graphite layers. The unodulatiota is described by a static distortionwave, which manifests itself iua the arrearamace of a satellite reak at IGR -Gol=1.78A ', for exaznple, where lG.l=2.95A ' is the fuxtdameuttal ira?-plane wavevector of graphite. This ntodel leads to a prediction that the Rb layc:r is rotatedre]at.ive to the graphite layer by -9'.
