Soft Phonons and Structural Phase Transition in CeCu_6

The structural phase transition of CeCu. has been studied by neutron scattering.The temperature dependence of the splitting angle of the Bragg point (0 2 0) corresponding to the distortion angle from the orthorhombic structure reveals that thistransition is nearly of second order. The soft phonons associated with the structuralphase transition were observed in the orthorhombic phase. The observed neutrongroups with this phonon mode are extremely narrow even near the transitiontemperature.
