Low-Lying Excited States in ^<213>Rn and ^<215>Ra

Gamma rays from low-lying levels in "'Rn and "'Ra have been studied followingthe "'Pb('Be, 4n)"'Rn and "'Pb("C, 3n)"'Ra reactions. Spins and parities were deter-mined by means of the measurements of 7 ray angular distributions, linear polariza-lions and lifetimes. Enhanced E3 transitions have been observed between the groundand the first excited state. The enhancements were as high as 38:5 for "'Rn and34*2 for "'Ra in Weisskopf unit. The enhancement is qualitatively explained by theparticle-vibration coupling model. Cascade [3 transitions have been observed in bothnuclei. The role of the two-phonon octupole vibration has been examined in relationto these cascade E3 transitions.NUCLEAR REACTIONS "'Pb('Be,4n), A=31-57 MeV; "'Pb("C,3n),E=63-75 MeV; measured E, I,(0), o(E, E,), y7-coin, y - y(t), pulsed-beam-7timing, linear polarization (7), Ge(Li) detectors, enriched target.
