Magnetic Properties of the Heavy-Fermion Antiferromagnet Ce_7Ni_3

We report on the rrtagnetic, transport, and thermal properties of a he;rvy-f'ermion antiferro-magnet CewNia. The Ce ions in the three noneqvtiva[ent sites are found to be very close totrivalent from Llll X-ray atbsorption spectroscopy and u'xa?xgnetic susceptibility rneasurenaents.The ttaagnetic stusceptibility along the c axis exhibits a pronounced peak at the N!el tertaperature T? = 1.9 K, while that along the b axis defined perpendicttl?tr to the a axis shows a rovxndedrnaxinaurn at 0.6K. The tnagnetization ctrrve f'or Bfc at 1.4K exhibits a unetarnagnetic transi-tion at O.2T, and reaches a value of l.O7?s/Ce at 36T. The electrical resistivity p(T) L'or Ifcttrrns up below Tg, whereas those f'or I 7 a ttnd I 7b decrease. These results stuggest that the antiferromagnetic order creates a partial gajc along the c ?txis on the Ferrni surface. The naagneticentropy due to 4 f electrons reaches O.47R In 2 at Tg. The naagnetic tnornent and naagnetic entropy in the antiferrounagnetic state are substantially redtrced by the cornbination of the Kondoeffect and crystalline electric field (CBF) efl'ect. The Kondo tenaperature and energy of the firstCEF level are estirnated to be 7 K and 240 K, respectively, by the analysis of the specific heat.
