Resonant Photoemission Study of CeCu_2 and CeCu_2Si_2

The energy distribution of the 4f partial density of states has been measured onCeCuz and CeCu.Si. by means of the 4d-4f resonant photoemission. In CeCu., stateswith the 4f character are distributed all over the valence band forming a major peakat 2.3 eV below the Fermi edge; the Ce 5d band exists near the Fermi level where thefractional density of the states with the 4f character is low. In CeCu.Si., the 4f bandspreads over the range within 3.5 eV from the Fermi edge with a few fine structuresand does not form a prominent peak; the 4f partial density of states at the Fermi levelis much higher than those in CeCu. and CeCu.. Such aspects suggest a large hoppingmatrix element between the 4f level and the conduction states, as is consistent with theheavy-fermion superconductivity in CeCu.Si..
