X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study of U (Rh_<1-x>Pd_x)_3 Alloys

• The XPS valence-band and core-level spectra of psettdo-binary U(Rhn .Pd.)a alloys for .11' O 0,0.83, 0.93, 0.97, and 1.0 were rneasured to investigate the systeunatics of their core-level spectra.We cotrld consistently understand their U 4 f core-level spectra by asstrming three final-stateconfigurations, like the core-level spectra of' rnixed-valence Ce-based conapotrnds. These finalstates are ascribed to predouaainance of' 5f'-, 5.f'-, and 5/"-configtrrations, which are catrsedby the naixed valence with 5/'(U") and 5.7"(U") character in the initial state. The resttltsindicate the possibility of deterzaaining the valence states of other trranitrm corrtpotrnds frotm theanalysis of their core-level spectra.
