X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopic Study of Ce-Based Amorphous Alloys

Valence band and core level XPS spectra have been measured for the amorphous Ce.Ru)0g .(I = 18, 58, 81), Ce.Cu?gg . (.r : 14, 33, 50) and Ce,3?Si3j alloys produced by sputtering.The cotrpling constant between the 4f and conduction electron levels, A, and the number of 4felectrons, n(, are estimated from the Ce-3d core level spectra. The arnorphotrs Ce.Cujgg . (r :-14, 33, 50) and Ce(5(5Si3j alloys are heavy ferrnion systems with snaall A, while the amorphousCe.Rtr?oo . (I : 18, 58, 81) allays are intermediate valence systems with large A. We also derivethe zero ternperature rtaagnetic susceptibility, .)(O), and Kondo tetnperature, Ty, from thesespectroscopic data and cotnpare with those estinuated from several low temperature physicalproperties.
