Magnetic Structure of Ce(Ni_<1-y>Pd_x)_2Ge_2 Proximate to the Magnetic Instability(Condensed Matter : Electronic Structure, Electrical, Magnetic and Optical Properties)

The magnetic structure of heavy-fermion antiferromagnets Ce(Ni_<1-y>Pd_x)_2Ge_2 proximate to the magnetic instability has been studied by elastic neutron scattering using single crystals. For Ce(Ni_<0.65>Pd_<0.35>)_2Ge_2, antiferromagnetic ordering with an incommensurate propagation vector q = (1/2, 1/2,δ);δ 〜 0.16 is observed below T_N = 3.4 K. The integrated intensities of magnetic Bragg peaks at 1.8 K are well fitted by assuming a sine-wave-modulated structure with the amplitude 0.55 ± 0.04 μ_B and magnetic moments along [110]. For the compound very near the magnetic instability, Ce(Ni_<0.90>Pd_<0.10>)_2Ge_2, the ordered moment is expected to be reduced to below 0.1 μ_B.
